Ida Bookwalter
June
2, 1911-Feb. 9, 2010
Ida BOOKWALTER, 98,
Ida was born June 2, 1911, in Young
America, to Melvin and Estella (Michaels) Snavely. Growing up, young Ida shared
her childhood years with five sisters and a brother.
On March 26, 1932, in
During her retirement years Ida
greatly enjoyed fishing with her trusty casting rod from her north shore home,
landing many blue gill and bass. As a dynamic team, Floyd cleaned the fish and
Ida fried them to perfection. The kitchen was second nature for Ida. She was
well-known for the delicious homemade pies she created to complement the
dessert fare at Gropp's Restaurant. Her pie most requested by Floyd was lemon
cream.
Preparation of the feast for family
celebrations, especially at the holidays, was Ida's forte. Many memories were
made in the kitchen with her grandchildren. Their favorite food was grandma's
potato soup. They would help her make the rivulets, then enjoy the tasty hot
soup.
It was remembered that she served as
den mother to the Cub Scouts for several years. Ida could play the violin with
great expertise. As a card player, Ida enjoyed spirited games of euchre.
As an artist, Ida's chosen method of
expression was through the medium of oils on canvas. She created many treasures
for special friends and heirlooms for family, usually of landscapes or florals.
It's known to a few that Ida was a
survivor of breast cancer. She was first stricken at age 26. Ida was honored to
be recognized for her spirit and positive attitude as a survivor and was
featured on the survivors' calendar on December 2004.
Ida was a devoted member of the

happiness to his family and all that met him. His bright blue eyes twinkled

As a loving son and grandson he gave
the best lover dovers imaginable. Rylan persevered with great determination
showing his affections, loving hugs, cuddling, sweet kisses and baby talking

Fighting a long, hard battle with his

With agriculture in his blood, Greg
greatly enjoyed a lifelong love for farming. There was nothing better than the
smell of the fresh soil turning in the spring fields, on a crisp day while
plowing or discing. The bountiful autumn harvest was a great reward of beans,
corn and wheat planted earlier in the season. In more recent years Greg's
interests transitioned from the fields to a huge truck patch garden and the
pride he exhibited with the care of his lawn and landscape of his home.
Throughout the summer growing season Greg issued reports on the progress of the

Rose A. Lewis
Dec.
18, 1920-April 12, 2010
Rose Ann LEWIS, 89, of 2057 E. Fourth St., (Tiosa) Rochester, passed
away April 12 in Lake Wales, Fla.
Rose was born in Marshall County on
Dec. 18, 1920, the daughter of the late James and Aurel Ethel (McQuen)
Hershberger.
On June 4, 1939, at the Walnut Church
of the Brethren, Rose married her best friend Richard F. "Dick"
Lewis. Their union spanned nearly 65 years and yielded two children, Sharon and
Hugh.
Rose is remembered for sharing her
culinary skills and cooking with Florence Beehler for the students of Richland
Center School for 16 years until consolidation closed the school in 1964. Later
Rose worked at Wile's department store in Rochester. She was a faithful and
loyal member of the Tiosa First Brethren Church and Order of the Eastern Star
No. 26, Plymouth Chapter, and she was appointed as past matron of the Argos OES
four times during her tenure.
The Lewis family was close knit; each
summer they looked forward to vacationing together. This annual event took the
family a different direction each summer, and together they traveled to all 48
continental states. Later Rose and Dick toured Hawaii and Alaska to complete an
all state tour. Many great memories were made when Rose and Dick went down
under, vacationing in Australia. For nearly 40 years they enjoyed the warmth of
the winter sunshine in Lake Wales while making a number of special snowbird
friends from across the United States. Together they cultivated friendships at
the card table while enjoying games of canasta and euchre. Both she and Dick
never met a stranger. She was known for her contagious smile and positive
attitude.
Rose dearly loved her family and
looked forward to holidays and special family celebrations, as she always baked
and cooked to prepare the feast for her family to enjoy. To stay mentally sharp
Rose challenged herself with word search puzzles. She created custom greeting
cards using embroidery or sewing threads to add a special touch. To relax, Rose
listened to the music of Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kaye, especially while making
Sunday dinner.
Rose is survived by a daughter, Sharon
Baker, Rochester; a son, Hugh Lewis, St. Augustine, Fla.; two sisters, Harriett
Winterrowd, Winona Lake, and Dorotha M. Sheets, Winona Lake; five
grandchildren, Donald Baker, Beverly Rutledge, Caryl Biltz, and Gavin and Adam
Lewis; four great-grandchildren, Beth and Savanna Baker, Amber Garrett, and
Justin Biltz; and three great-great-grandchildren, Dezzerie Garrett, Emma Rose
Sheets and Daniel Warren Combs.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, and two brothers, Marvin and Carl Hershberger.
